Golden Hour wedding photography at Dove Stones reservoir, Saddleworth: Why I love an outdoor wedding photo shoot
If you’re looking for a picturesque and rugged spot for your wedding photos, let me introduce you to the particularly photogenic Dove Stones Reservoir. Nestled just far enough from the bustling metropolis that is Saddleworth (joke), to make you question your shoe choices, this place offers jaw-dropping views, fantastic golden hour light, and just enough wind to give you that Beyoncé-hair moment (whether you want it or not).
Two day wedding photo shoot
First of all, let’s be clear, this was not the actual wedding day, that had taken place a few days before at The Catholic Church in Uppermill, which was perfectly personal for Liz & Ian.
The photo session at Dove Stones was chosen so we could include the couple’s delightful dog, Grim. The rocks, water and paths of Dove Stones turn into a photographer’s playground about an hour before sunset. The scenery has just the right amount of drama without upstaging the couple. This place is local to the couple, so it really meant something to them for the landscape to feature in their most precious photos.
Not Your Average Couple’s Shoot
I love this spot because it lets couples be themselves. Especially in the evening, you generally have the place to yourselves. If you want to twirl in your dress like you’re starring in your own indie film? Or prefer to sit on a boulder and eat Kendal Mint Cake while I capture you in the landscape, just go for it.
Even the more camera-shy couples relax here. Maybe it’s the view, or that there’s no-one around to make you feel self conscious. Either way, we end up with authentic, joyful, sometimes hilariously wind-swept photos that capture the spirit of the day — not just the posed perfection.
A Few Words of Advice
-
Wear shoes suitable for off-roading. There are rocks. There are roots. There will be sheep, and what they leave behind..
-
Bring layers. It gets chilly when the sun dips, and get wrapped up with each other, remember you’re up North.
-
Be ready to laugh. The best photos come when you forget you’re being photographed. Concentrate on each other, that’s why we’re here.
Final Verdict
If you’re into epic views, but without the massive hike, Dove Stones is the kind of place that delivers jaw-dropping shots within walking distance of the car park. It’s a romantic, peaceful, and often blustery place for photos, but you will won’t regret coming here.
